We honor and celebrate the life of Dorothy Jane Buckner Murdaugh Davis, who was born on
January 28, 1939, in Colleton County, and transitioned into eternal rest on January 20, 2026. The
cherished baby girl of the late Walter Buckner and Julia Davis Buckner, Dorothy’s life was
marked by quiet strength, warmth, and enduring love.
Affectionately known as “Dot” and “Jane,” Dorothy was a woman of deep faith whose God-
fearing spirit guided every aspect of her life. At an early age, Dorothy joined St. John Missionary
Baptist Church in Varnville, South Carolina, where her faith took root and remained a guiding
force throughout her life. She received her education in the family-oriented schools of Ruffin,
South Carolina, and as an adult, she earned an honest living through dedicated and purposeful
work as a seamstress, providing for her family with pride and perseverance.
In 1958 Dorothy was united in Holy Matrimony to Edward Murdaugh, Jr. who preceded her in
death, a loss she carried with strength and grace. From this union, three children were born:
daughter Gloria Jane Murdaugh Johnson, who preceded her in death; one son, John (Karen)
Murdaugh of Blythe, Georgia; and daughter, Barbara Ann Murdaugh of Walterboro, South
Carolina. Dorothy was preceded in death by six sisters and five brothers. She was also preceded
in death by one grandson, Valente Rakell Eady.
Dorothy was uplifting, caring, loving, and selfless, always putting others before herself and
offering comfort through both her words and her actions. Her presence brought peace, her
prayers brought strength, and her home was a place of warmth and love. Known as an amazing
cook, she expressed her love through meals prepared with care, gathering family together and
creating memories that will be cherished forever.
She leaves to cherish her loving memory two loving children: John (Karen) Murdaugh and
Barabara Ann Murdaugh, four granddaughters: LaTonya C. Murdaugh of Eastover, South
Carolina; Elanda Murdaugh of Hephzibah, Georgia; Brittany (Justin) Hodges of Columbia,
South Carolina; and Sharla "CeCe" Johnson of Walterboro, South Carolina; three grandsons: Pastor Shon
(Celia) Johnson of Summerville, South Carolina; Jonathan Murdaugh of Martinez, Georgia;
and Len Mathurin, Jr. of Charleston, South Carolina; two brothers, David Buckner of Islandton,
South Carolina and Joseph Buckner of Lodge, South Carolina; one brother-in-law, Henry W.
Murdaugh of Columbia, South Carolina; one son-in-law, H. Tyrone Johnson of Walterboro, SC;
four close friends: Josephine Boatwright, Willie Mae Dix, Janie Edwards, and Carolyn Nelson,
sixteen great-grandchildren, six great-great-grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends.
